202 Bartók – Noi umblăm da corindare

‘We walk around singing’ is the title of this short piece. Bartok arranged two series of short Romanian Christmas carols. This is number 8 from the first series. It’s nice to have a different kind of Christmas song. The added pizzicato and tongue stops make the music even more rhythmic.

Bisbigliandi, or color trills are quite interesting. It is fascinating to play with differences in timbre. In this arrangement, the 2nd and 3rd parts color this piece with bisbigliandi, accompanying the melody and supported by the fourth part, which you can also play on a bass flute.

 164 Fun with ‘Mistletoe’

Practicing long notes is a good way to warm up. Adding flutter tongue to the note improves your support. This song is also perfect for practicing this multiphonic. What a wonderful feeling when you let those two notes sound at the same time.

 163 Fum Fum Fum

This cheerful Christmas song is even more fun with pitch bending. Try to lower the A until you hear the G sharp. A very good exercise for flexibility and intonation.

 162 Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Harmonics are good for practicing support and flexibility. That’s why your sound gets bigger. Practice this song first with the regular notes, then with the harmonics, and the third time with the regular notes again. Compare the first and third time and notice the difference in sound.

 161 Carol of the Bells

The sound of a bell is strong at the beginning of the note and then soft immediately. That reminded me of tongue stops, so I made this Carol of the Bells a bit like Carol of the Tongsstops.

124 Ding Dong Merrily On High

In this Flute Colors arrangement we give the melody a little rhythm by adding the wind sounds. Find yourself a pianist and start having

122 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Not only angels sing this piece but now we can also play it on the flute the Flute Colors way! The pizzicato notes form a second (and sometimes fourth) part. A very nice coordination exercise.
