Multiphonics based on harmonics are extra special. They sound beautiful without tension in the intervals. When you play very softly and relaxed they work best. Use vowels to achieve the goal of playing the notes together, don’t be tempted to blow more for the higher note.

Multiphonics gebaseerd op harmonics zijn extra speciaal. Ze klinken prachtig zonder spanning in de intervallen. Als je heel zacht en ontspannen speelt, werken ze het beste. Gebruik vocalen om het doel te bereiken om de noten samen te spelen, wees niet geneigd om meer te blazen voor de hogere noot.

Working on multiphonics is an interesting process. Playing two notes at the same time is a magical feeling once we have control. In our study process it sometimes happens that we hear two notes at the same time, but usually unintentionally. In this exercise we try to play two notes together on purpose.

Werken aan multiphonics is een interessant proces. Twee noten tegelijk spelen is een magisch gevoel als we eenmaal de controle hebben. In ons studieproces gebeurt het soms dat we twee noten tegelijk horen, maar meestal onbedoeld. In deze oefening proberen we twee noten expres samen te spelen.

The introduction of ‘Avec la garde montante’ from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ is a perfect march to practice multiphonics. I like this multiphonic of C#-E because it sounds consonant and this multiphonic is not that difficult. You can practice it four times in this fragment. Don’t try too hard, just enjoy the journey.

De introductie van ‘Avec la garde montante’ uit Bizets ‘Carmen’ is een perfecte mars om multiphonics te oefenen. Ik hou van de multiphonic van C#-E omdat het consonant klinkt en deze multiphonic is niet zo moeilijk. In dit fragment kun je het vier keer oefenen. Probeer niet te hard, geniet gewoon van de reis.

Multiphonics can have a super fun effect. How cool is it that you can play a accompanying figure with two notes at the same time all by yourself! You can try that out in this duet. Experiment with the multiphonics and let loose. But don’t forget to always check the fingering first. The correct fingering is super important.

Multiphonics kunnen een superleuk effect hebben. Hoe gaaf is het dat je in je eentje een begeleidingsfiguur kunt spelen met twee noten tegelijk! In dit duet kun je dat uitproberen. Experimenteer met de multiphonics en laat je gaan. Maar vergeet niet om altijd eerst even de greep te controleren. De juiste greep is superbelangrijk.

This exercise focuses entirely on multiphonics. I chose three and built it up gradually. You can first practice a little with both sounds of a multiphonic separately and then combine them. The multiphonics used in this exercise work best when you play them very softly.

Deze oefening richt zich volledig op multiphonics. Ik heb er drie uitgekozen en geleidelijk opgebouwd. Je kunt eerst een beetje oefenen met beide tonen van een multiphonic afzonderlijk en ze vervolgens combineren. De multiphonics die in deze oefening worden gebruikt, werken het beste als je ze heel zacht speelt.

One of the most fascinating techniques on the flute are multiphonics. Not only is their sound unique, everything we’ve learned about playing with the right support and airspeed to play a note well needs to be rethought. Two relatively easy multiphonics have been chosen for this piece. Don’t think too much about it and just go for it!

Een van de meest fascinerende technieken op de fluit zijn multiphonics. Niet alleen is hun geluid uniek, alles wat we hebben geleerd over spelen met de juiste ademsteun en luchtsnelheid om een noot goed te spelen, moet worden heroverwogen. Voor dit stuk is gekozen voor twee relatief gemakkelijke multiphonics. Denk er niet te veel over na en ga er gewoon voor!

Singing and playing and multiphonics are the techniques we can practice with this exercise. Both techniques invite you to work on coordination because we have to do two things at once. A challenge but well worth it!

Zingen en spelen en multiphonics zijn de technieken die we kunnen oefenen met deze oefening. Beide technieken dagen je uit te werken aan coördinatie omdat we twee dingen tegelijk moeten doen. Een uitdaging die zeker de moeite waard is!

Working on multiphonics is useful for many things. Become aware of the space in your mouth, air pressure, auditory skills. To work on finger movements a bit I’ve added key clicks with and without flute sound and to work on supporting I added harmonics. Relax and practise with an open mind.

Werken aan multiphonics is voor veel dingen nuttig. Word je bewust van de ruimte in je mond, luchtdruk, auditieve vaardigheden. Om wat aan vingerbewegingen te werken heb ik key clicks met en zonder fluitklank toegevoegd en om aan de ademsteun te werken heb ik harmonics toegevoegd. Ontspan en oefen met een open mind.

As a child I had piano lessons. I have played this piece over and over again. I loved it. Now we can play this piece and practice multiphonics. I didn’t add actual multiphonics, but in this arrangement you can practice the steps to play multiphonics. And who knows, maybe the multiphonic just appears.

Als kind had ik pianoles. Ik heb dit stuk keer op keer gespeeld. Ik vond het geweldig. Nu kunnen we dit stuk spelen en multiphonics oefenen. Ik heb geen echte multiphonic toegevoegd, maar in dit arrangement kun je de stappen oefenen om multiphonics te spelen. En wie weet, misschien ontstaat de multiphonic gewoon.
