 273 Fun with ‘Multicolor’

This exercise focuses entirely on multiphonics. I chose three and built it up gradually. You can first practice a little with both sounds of a multiphonic separately and then combine them. The multiphonics used in this exercise work best when you play them very softly.

257 Sullivan – The Flowers That Bloom In The Spring

‘The Flowers that bloom in the spring, tra la. Breathe promise of merry sunshine’. Hopeful words from this song from Sullivan’s opera ‘Mikado’. The play premiered on March 14, 1885 and ran for 672 performances in 1885 alone! A great success and now available for us to practice multiphonics.

 255 The Siege of Limerick

One of the most fascinating techniques on the flute are multiphonics. Not only is their sound unique, everything we’ve learned about playing with the right support and airspeed to play a note well needs to be rethought. Two relatively easy multiphonics have been chosen for this piece. Don’t think too much about it and just go for it!

241 Fun with ‘It’s Me And You This Christmas’

Singing and playing and multiphonics are the techniques we can practice with this exercise. Both techniques invite you to work on coordination because we have to do two things at once. A challenge but well worth it!

Working on multiphonics is useful for many things. Become aware of the space in your mouth, air pressure, auditory skills. To work on finger movements a bit I’ve added key clicks with and without flute sound and to work on supporting I added harmonics. Relax and practise with an open mind.

 207 Horr – Sonatine C-dur, 1st movement

As a child I had piano lessons. I have played this piece over and over again. I loved it. Now we can play this piece and practice multiphonics. I didn’t add actual multiphonics, but in this arrangement you can practice the steps to play multiphonics. And who knows, maybe the multiphonic just appears.

 191 Fun with ‘Hero’

Multiphonics can be magical and in this arrangement I challenge you to do just go for it. The key clicks combined with the actual flute sound of the flute are a good way to practice coordination between the tongue and fingers and the harmonics are very useful for support and embouchure.

 180 Ievan Polkka

The catchy tune from Finland is perfect for adding multiphonics. It makes the song even funnier. Don’t pay too much attention to getting the multiphonic “right”. Get the right fingering and go for it!

 164 Fun with ‘Mistletoe’

Practicing long notes is a good way to warm up. Adding flutter tongue to the note improves your support. This song is also perfect for practicing this multiphonic. What a wonderful feeling when you let those two notes sound at the same time.

143 Vivaldi – Adagio from Concerto RV 235

Vivaldi wrote a lot of beautiful music. A while ago I came across this piece and decided to arrange it one day. I tried to capture the soft and fragile accompaniment with wind sounds. The solo flute has many possibilities to flourish.
