178 Fun with ‘Who’s Laughing Now’

Who is laughing now? I hope you are after playing this warm up exercise! A great start for your daily studies. Exercises for embouchure and intonation (tone bending), articulation (pizzicato) and support (harmonics). All in one piece.

 177 Popp – Study No. 6, Op. 205

A technique often used in music for solo flute is the combination of melody and accompaniment by one player. To practice this technique, often used in Baroque music and in the Romantic period, I have arranged this study and added wind sounds to make the difference between the two musical lines clearer.

176 Fun with ‘Little in the Middle’

For my online workshops, I needed a song to practice some of the more challenging techniques such as whistle tones and circular breathing. This exercise is designed to experiment with these techniques without pressure. So don’t focus too much on the results, but explore the possibilities.

 175 The Huron Carol

I recently rediscovered Ghost Harmonics. They are truly amazing. In this song I use them to work on the color of the sound. Enjoy the bamboo-like sound and try not to force the sound. Play with a relaxed embouchure.

 174 Drouet – Studie no. 12 from 25 studies

I like to add extended techniques to studies. I really feel like they can challenge you to play it better in the end. In this study I alternated pizzicato with traditional sound. A good exercise for your tongue, articulation, support and flexibility.

 173 If I Where A Blackbird

If I were a blackbird I would sing with as many colors as possible. This is a simple melody. Adding the key clicks is a good coordination exercise. It should sound like two flutes are playing. Let the melody sing and make the key clicks very rhythmic.

172 Fun with ‘Better When I’m Dancing’

Unfortunately I can’t dance. This song makes me feel like I can. It’s hard to sit still and just play this exercise. I suggest you don’t fight it and go with the flow. The key clicks in this exercise help you improve the finger movement, the wind sounds make the embouchure flexible and to activate the abdomen I added tongue stops to the exercise.

 171 Foster – Beautiful Dreamer

Stephen C. Foster wrote numerous pieces and songs. All in a beautiful, simple style. This song is an example. I added some bisbigliando trills. It’s fun to play with timbre a bit and working with different fingerings gives you more flexibility.

 170 – Boismortier – Menuet I & II

Harmonics are useful for support and embouchure. Practicing this duet in this way will greatly improve your sound. You can use vowels to make the harmonics smoother and easier.

 169 Andersen – Study No. 9, Op. 37

Working with wind sounds is magical to me. They make the embouchure flexible and that helps me in any flute situation. They are also perfect for practicing dynamics. In order to play softly on the flute , we have to move our lower lip forward. This exercise is for practicing that. Practice slowly as this is a very tiring exercise!
