The first time I heard this song was by James Galway with his very big sound. The melody is beautiful. Bamboo tones seem like a great match to color the melody and give it some character. And it’s also a great brain training to learn all the fingers.

De eerste keer dat ik dit nummer hoorde was van James Galway met zijn hele grote klank. De melodie is prachtig. Bamboetonen lijken een geweldige match om de melodie te kleuren en wat karakter te geven. En het is ook een geweldige braintraining om alle grepen te onthouden.

Multiphonics based on harmonics are extra special. They sound beautiful without tension in the intervals. When you play very softly and relaxed they work best. Use vowels to achieve the goal of playing the notes together, don’t be tempted to blow more for the higher note.

Multiphonics gebaseerd op harmonics zijn extra speciaal. Ze klinken prachtig zonder spanning in de intervallen. Als je heel zacht en ontspannen speelt, werken ze het beste. Gebruik vocalen om het doel te bereiken om de noten samen te spelen, wees niet geneigd om meer te blazen voor de hogere noot.

Working on multiphonics is an interesting process. Playing two notes at the same time is a magical feeling once we have control. In our study process it sometimes happens that we hear two notes at the same time, but usually unintentionally. In this exercise we try to play two notes together on purpose.

Werken aan multiphonics is een interessant proces. Twee noten tegelijk spelen is een magisch gevoel als we eenmaal de controle hebben. In ons studieproces gebeurt het soms dat we twee noten tegelijk horen, maar meestal onbedoeld. In deze oefening proberen we twee noten expres samen te spelen.

‘Le paradis terréste’, means ‘The Earthly Paradise’. It is an ancient song that was sung around Christmas. In this arrangement we can practice whistle tones in the accompaniment. Whistle tones work best in the higher register. Use the shape of your tongue to make the tones more stable.

The famous ‘Danse Macabre’ by Camille Saint-Saëns tells a story about death who wakes the dead from their graves at midnight to dance with each other. Rich and poor dance together, because after death we are all the same. The singing and playing part in the middle is not only good for the sound, it also adds a bit of a scary touch.

De beroemde ‘Danse Macabre’ van Camille Saint-Saëns vertelt een verhaal over de dood die om middernacht de doden uit hun graven wekt om met elkaar te dansen. Rijk en arm dansen samen, want na de dood zijn we allemaal gelijk. Zingen en spelen deel is niet alleen goed voor klankontwikkeling, het voegt ook een beetje een eng tintje toe.

Mozart would have been quite naughty at times. This is evident from his letters and sometimes also from his composition. The original lyrics from this round were made up by Mozart himself. In this arrangement we can get crazy with whistle tones. Just experiment and have fun, like Mozart did.

Mozart zou soms behoorlijk ondeugend zijn geweest. Dat blijkt uit zijn brieven en soms ook uit zijn compositie. De originele tekst van deze canon is door Mozart zelf verzonnen. In deze bewerking kunnen we losgaan met whistle tones. Gewoon experimenteren en lol maken, zoals Mozart deed.

Ghost harmonics are very good for practicing a relaxed embouchure. I like them very much and use them a lot. It is possible to play the low notes with the fingering of a note from the third register. And then play without forcing the sound, which produces a very soft and bamboo-like sound.

Ghost harmonics zijn erg goed om een ontspannen embouchure te oefenen. Ik vind ze erg fijn en gebruik ze veel. Het is mogelijk om de lage noten te spelen met de greep van een noot uit het derde register. En dan spelen zonder het geluid te forceren, wat een heel zacht en bamboe-achtig geluid oplevert.

‘They say you know it when you know it, and I know’, the lyrics of this song have multiple layers. This time I wrote two versions with different levels on request. I liked this idea and so I wrote two exercises that can be combined. Ideal if you have a group lesson with students of different levels.

Sometimes I discover a composer unknown to me who is quite interesting. This was the case with Jean-Daniel Braune. I found one of his pieces. And when I looked on YouTube, I found out that he is quite famous… Well, you can’t know everything. This Allemanda from one of his solo pieces is great for experiencing the benefits of practising harmonics. A real puzzle in the beginning!

Soms ontdek ik een voor mij onbekende componist die best interessant is. Dit was het geval bij Jean-Daniel Braune. Ik heb een van zijn stukken gevonden. En toen ik op YouTube keek, kwam ik erachter dat hij best bekend is… Nou ja, je kunt niet alles weten. Deze Allemanda uit een van zijn solostukken is geweldig om de voordelen van het oefenen van harmonics te ervaren. Een echte puzzel in het begin!

The melody of this round is easy and therefore perfect for practicing singing and playing. In the first variation you can sing a bass line and in the second variation you can sing and play the melody as a round. Ideal for practising coordination and intonation. It looks difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it’s fun!

De melodie van deze ronde is makkelijk en daarom perfect om te oefenen met zingen en spelen. In de eerste variant kun je een baslijn zingen en in de tweede variant kun je de melodie als een ronde zingen en spelen. Ideaal voor het oefenen van coördinatie en intonatie. Het lijkt moeilijk, maar als je het eenmaal onder de knie hebt, is het leuk!
